Storytelling songs
I have no idea what most of the music I listen to is about. I can know every single word of a song without ever understanding what they mean. I often think that some songwriters make their songs purposely cryptic so they seem mysterious and edgy. Sometimes it’s an advantage, if I understood the Christian references in the songs of Athlete, it would probably ruin them for me, and...

Top 5 best things I ever did
Left my all boys grammar school to go to Brockenhurst College. Chose to study in Bristol. Kissed my girlfriend for the first time. Worked up the courage to send my sitcom script out. Left the job I hated. If you ever get the opportunity do any of those things, I would highly recommend them. But please don’t kiss MY girlfriend.

My rampant text life
I’ve been trying to throw things out this weekend, but I’m clinically sentimental and find it really hard. For example, I still have every phone handset I’ve ever owned. The reason I keep them is that they’re full of memories, text messages I’ve received and sent. I hardly ever send texts anymore, thanks to instant messaging, Facebook and the arduousness of typing on a touchscreen keyboard....

– Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies - Biffy Clyro I’ve been getting into Biffy Clyro a lot recently. As Phil puts it, they’re the thinking man’s emo. I’m always amazed by the soothing appeal of sad music, because in my experience “I listen to pop music because...

My songs of 2009
I was inspired to put together a playlist of songs from 2009 that I like, because of the awful NME 2009 Spotify playlist that I caught my girlfriend listening to. I loathe NME, a magazine that applies a high-school popularity contest to the music business, being at once sycophantic to the trendy kids they’ve labelled “cool” and bullies towards the mainstream kids. They...

– Homer Simpson. This classic line seems to perfectly sum up my current situation. I’ve had a headache for a month, which is likely caused by neck and back pain I’ve developed from working at a desk all day. So, I’m desperately trying to spend time writing in the hope that my...

The films I watched in 2009
At the start of 2009 I decided that I would keep track of every film I watched in the year, with the rating I give it out of ten. Back then I’m not sure what the purpose was, but a year later I have the perfect platform for such a list. The kind of end of year list that will prove to be so popular with readers who are not at all tired of reading round-ups of the passing year. The films...

Jon's Christmas Crackers
I’ve created the definitive Christmas playlist, by hand-picking the best recordings of the classic Christmas songs. Let me know if I’m forgetting a classic. Although I’m pretty confident it’s perfect. Nat King Cole – The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You) Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You Paul McCartney – Wonderful Christmastime Shakin’ Stevens...

I wrote the voiceover script for this video! A flashy Playstation trailer that is on the Playstation site, the Playstation Europe blog, US gaming blog Joystiq and plenty of other places. Sure, they did edit my script a bit, and the voiceover guy is a kind of annoying, but I’m still excited about it! And it’s promoting a rather cool new video download service for Playstation, which if...

The Blogging Diaries - Part 2
After SpiroGate, the disgraced radio presenter that I was decided to lay low for a while. I’d been burnt by Google, foolishly forgetting that when I was writing to my friends, it was accessible to the whole world. However, the scandal had coincided with a rich vein of blogging, and I wasn’t prepared to give it up all together. I decided to take my blogging underground, with a covert...

Plans - Death Cab For Cutie →
I can’t believe I’ve only just found this brilliant album. I could have been listening to it for 4 years and now I’ve only got 75 years left in which to enjoy it. I hold my idiot friends fully responsible. How did I find it? Thanks to Ricky Gervais posting a song from it on his blog. So, not only did he create one of my top five favourite sitcoms of all time, he also...

The Blogging Diaries - Part One
This tumblog is my fifth attempt foray into the world of blogging and the fourth incarnation of SpiroJunk, which, for the slow of mind, is an anagram of my name. Which, for the bereft of mind, is Jon Purkis. I first got into blogging in 2004, inspired by the trendsetting Phil and his then successful Phil’s Brains blog. I was at University, so I had plenty of time in which to blog and...
